Neo-soul queen Erykah Badu is back in the studio, and this time, it’s for a full-length album—the first one she’s put out in 15 years.
In a recent chat with Billboard, Badu confirmed that she’s working with The Alchemist on a brand-new project, her official follow-up to New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh). While she didn’t spill too many details about the album just yet, the excitement is real.
During the interview, she also shared her thoughts on hip-hop today, even though she doesn’t follow the scene as closely as she used to. “The thing I like about rap right now is the same thing I liked about rap when I first met it,” she said.
She went on to explain that hip-hop has always been about the people. “It’s the folks. It’s the tribe. I have the luxury of watching my kids grow up and encouraging them, and when I see young artists coming up, I can’t separate the two. That’s how they feel. They’re carrying on the tradition.”
While Badu’s last studio album dropped back in 2010, she did bless us with the But You Caint Use My Phone mixtape in 2015, which featured André 3000 and ItsRoutine. But now, after more than a decade, fans can finally look forward to a fresh batch of Badu magic. Stay tuned!
