On 1/24/2021 Dustin Porier defeated Conor McGregor with a second-round TKO in the main event of UFC 257 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi early Sunday. Halfway through the second round, Poirier unleashed a flurry of punches on his opponent McGregor, immediately knocking him out and getting his revenge from the Irish superstar.
The two fighters first met in September of 2014 as featherweights, and McGregor won by knockout just 106 seconds into the fight, making it an incredible success for Mcgregor’s early career. Mcgregor went on to become the featherweight champion 15 months later, whereas Porier would rebuild his career with just one loss in his next 11 fights. The rematch was 6 ½ years in the making and with a second chance to fight Mcgregor and hopes regaining the lightweight title he once proudly had, Prior made sure to give it his all and he did not miss. He was much more composed this time around and improved his fighting skills in the last 6 ½ years.
He used a combination of leg-kicks and grappling to find the opening he needed to to land those punches on Mcgregor that secured his victory. Prior is now a top power player in the lightweight division and is one to set sight on as he will probably aim for the lightweight title. The fight was a much anticipated one, and UFC 257 is expected to be one of the most popular pay-per-view events in the promotion’s history, so much so that the huge amount of online traffic caused distribution problems and fans took to social media and bombarded ESPN with complaints.
