After LVMH announced its plan to supply French authorities with at least 40 million masks by securing an order from a Chinese manufacturer, Louis Vuitton has launched the production of hundreds of thousands of non-surgical face masks. By repurposing its French workshops in Marsaz, Saint-Donat, Saint-Pourçain, Ducey and Sainte-Florence, three hundred artisans have been mobilized to increase production of alternative masks to aid in the battle against COVID-19 and protect healthcare workers on the frontline.
These non-surgical masks have been created in collaboration with Mode Grand Ouest, a regional network of the textile industry that is supplying the main materials for the company’s mask production. Michael Burke, Louis Vuitton’s CEO, formalized the start of production by visiting a workshop in Saint-Florence, where 22 artisans were voluntarily stationed to make masks.
“As an important French House, Louis Vuitton wishes to commit at its level to producing many thousands of masks that will be distributed within the region, at no charge, to protect those who are most exposed,” Burk explained. “This production is the fruit of a wonderful collaboration with the regional sector of the textile industry.”
